Packing Bench vs Packing Station: How to Spec a Fulfilment Line

Buying Guides

On a busy packing line, furniture either removes friction or adds it. A packing bench is the work surface. A packing station usually builds around that surface with roll dispensers and often overhead storage so consumables stay in reach. Getting the specification right reduces walking, clutter and double-handling.

A packing station combines work surface, roll feed and often overhead storage for fulfilment lines.

Start with how the line actually packs

Before choosing laminate or MDF, map three things: average parcel size, how many wrap types you use, and whether operators pick from totes or conveyors. The furniture should support that motion — not force operators to invent workarounds with cardboard and tape guns on the floor.

Worktop: laminate or MDF

Neither top replaces process hygiene rules; they simply match different cleaning and wear expectations.

Roll dispensers: lower vs dual

A lower roll keeps film or paper off the main deck so operators are not fighting a roll that sits in the middle of the parcel. Dual rolls help when a line switches between wrap types or needs continuous feed with fewer changeovers. Explore dual-roll options such as the dual roll laminate packing station.

When overhead storage earns its keep

Overhead storage is useful for tape, labels, void fill bags and small consumables that otherwise colonise the work surface. Stations such as the overhead packing station keep those items in arm’s reach without blocking the packing zone.

Link packing to materials handling

A packing station that cannot feed a trolley creates a second bottleneck. Pair packing furniture with trolleys and platform trucks so packed goods leave the cell cleanly. Colour-coding trolleys by destination is a simple visual control many fulfilment teams adopt.

Specification checklist

  1. Parcel size range and typical weight
  2. Number of wrap types and preferred roll positions
  3. Need for overhead consumable storage
  4. Operator height and reach (avoid deep benches that force stretch)
  5. Path from packing to dispatch (trolley type and aisle width)

The cost case in numbers

  • Order picking and packing dominate warehouse cost — industry studies commonly attribute the majority of warehouse operating cost to picking and packing activity, which is why small layout gains compound. The UK Warehousing Association (UKWA) represents the sector and publishes operational guidance.
  • Two wrap types, one station — dual-roll stations switch between paper and film without a changeover trip, which matters at peak despatch times.
  • Over a third of workplace injuries — manual handling is linked by the HSE to more than a third of workplace injuries; correct bench height and reach distances are part of the control set.

Packing bench FAQs

Laminate or MDF — which worktop lasts longer?

Laminate wins on wipe-clean hygiene and scuff resistance at high volume; MDF is a solid, economical industrial surface. Match the top to your cleaning regime and parcel volume rather than chasing a single “best”.

Do I need overhead storage?

If tape, labels and void fill currently live on the worktop, yes — overhead storage returns that surface to packing. If consumables already sit on shelving within arm’s reach, you can skip it.

Can I configure a station for two operators?

Yes. Wider benches with dual roll positions support two-person packing; configure sizes online or contact us for a multi-station layout.

What weight can the benches take?

Our packing benches are fully welded, steel-framed and built for industrial use. Tell us your heaviest typical parcel and any equipment you mount (scales, printers, monitors) and we will confirm the right frame and top.
