Choosing workshop storage

Workshop storage fails for one of two reasons. Either it is not strong enough, so the shelves bow under tooling and the doors stop shutting, or it is the wrong shape, so people stop putting things back. Both are avoidable by deciding what actually goes inside before choosing the cabinet.

Cupboard, drawers or louvre panel

A cupboard with adjustable shelves is the general answer for boxed stock, consumables and larger tooling. Drawers are for small parts and anything that needs to be found quickly or counted, and they keep their contents cleaner. A louvre panel back turns the inside of a cabinet into a bin store, which suits fixings and small components far better than a shelf does.

Weight is the thing people underestimate

Tooling, fixings and fluids are dense. A cabinet full of small steel parts can carry several hundred kilos, and that load sits on the shelves and the frame long before anyone thinks about it. Fully welded steel construction is the difference between a cabinet that still closes properly in five years and one that does not.

Locking and shared workshops

If the cabinet is in a shared area, assume it needs locking. Not because of theft so much as because unlocked storage in a shared space slowly becomes everybody’s and then nobody’s.

Siting it

Measure the doorway and check the floor is level before ordering a tall cabinet. Steel cabinets are unforgiving of uneven floors, and a cabinet that rocks will not stay square for long.

Built in Britain

All our cabinets and lockers are fully welded from British steel and finished to order, so size, internal layout and colour are specified rather than picked from stock. If you need something outside the standard range, send the dimensions and we will quote it.
