Capital Allowances 2025: Write Off New Workbenches & Trolleys on Day One

Business & Finance

Full expensing can allow UK companies to deduct 100% of qualifying plant and machinery in the year of purchase — including many industrial workbenches and trolleys. This article summarises the landscape for 2025 buyers. It is general information only; always take advice from your accountant or tax adviser for your facts.

What changed after the super-deduction

The temporary 130% super-deduction ended on 31 March 2023. It was replaced by full expensing: a 100% first-year allowance for qualifying new main-rate plant and machinery for companies, now established on a permanent basis. For the latest rules and definitions, use official guidance on GOV.UK capital allowances.

Headline tools buyers hear about

Allowance Typical rate Who it often helps
Full expensing (FYA) 100% on qualifying new main-rate plant Companies investing in new equipment
Special-rate FYA Lower rate on special-rate assets Certain long-life / integral categories
Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) 100% up to the statutory cap Wider business types; includes second-hand in many cases

Do workbenches and trolleys count as plant?

Factory and warehouse furniture that is part of the production or logistics process is commonly treated as plant and machinery — but classification depends on use and facts. New modular workbenches, packing benches and trolleys are typical candidates for discussion with your adviser when bought as business plant.

Illustrative maths (not a quote)

At a 25% corporation tax rate, a £25,000 spend that qualifies for a 100% first-year deduction could reduce taxable profit by £25,000 in that year — a cash tax effect of up to £6,250 in the simple illustration. Your position may differ because of losses, groups, timing and eligibility.

Practical compliance habits

  1. Keep invoices, serials and delivery dates.
  2. Confirm whether assets are new or second-hand (full expensing vs AIA differences matter).
  3. Bring equipment into use in the accounting period you intend to claim.
  4. Coordinate group AIA caps if you are part of a group.
  5. File claims via your corporation tax return process — not via a supplier.
