Choosing a tool trolley

A tool trolley is a workbench that follows the job. If your fitters spend half their time walking back to a fixed bench for a spanner, the bench is in the wrong place and a trolley is the answer. The right one depends far less on how many drawers it has than on what happens on top of it.

Worktop or storage first

Decide whether the top is a working surface or a shelf. If tools are being used on it, a steel or hardwood worktop takes the punishment and the trolley effectively becomes a mobile bench. If it is only carrying tools to a job, open trays and shelves are quicker to load and easier to see into.

Drawers, cupboards or open trays

Drawers suit small tooling and anything that needs to stay clean or accounted for. A lockable cupboard suits expensive kit and shared workshops. Open trays and tiers are fastest for a single user who wants to see everything at a glance and does not need to lock it away.

What actually decides the price

Capacity and construction, not features. A fully welded steel frame will outlast a bolted one for the whole of its working life, and it will still roll straight after being loaded past its rating and shoved into a doorway. Castor quality is the other half. Undersized castors are the most common reason a trolley stops rolling properly.

Sizing it

Measure the narrowest gap it has to pass through, not the space it will live in. Aisles, doorways and van tail lifts are what limit a trolley, and a top that is 100mm too wide makes the whole thing useless.
